Tell me in a few words, who you are. How would you describe
yourself in a short story.
My name is Erik Dickerson. I would describe myself as a genuine and loving person that just wants to see everyone win and everyone live good but I have always had a very hot temper and it has landed me in a lot of trouble before and caused many obstacles for me but now this music has given me another reason to work hard another reason to not do bad and actually pave a way for me and my family. I was born in Nyack Hospital and lived in the Bronx with my family for a few years before moving to Orange County NY where I lived in Middletown for half my life and then Pine Bush for the other half. I have always lived in NY but we did travel a lot while I was young before finally stopping here but we hope to leave this place soon as well. At least I do.
What’s your stage name and how did you come up with it?
My stage name is EKThePrince. I came up with it because the E and the K are the first and Last letters in my first name and it also is an acronym for “Everybody Killer” almost like “EBK” but i’m not affiliated. I always had that nature though being I have both friends in bloods and crips but since I don’t claim either I went with EK because in this game and in this lifestyle as I got older I realized I can only trust me and my family. Kill everybody and everyone else if they want to be the enemy.
What got you into music?
What got me into music was mostly my close friends pushing me to try it and actually write songs and record them. I always loved music since I was a kid and always loved to listen to it 24/7 but I never realized how much it meant to me and sat by my heart until I started to become an artist and actually make music and be around it much more.
What was life like growing up?
Life growing up was not bad. It wasn’t the greatest but it wasn’t bad. I tend to always try and look at the bright side of things and take a look and realize me and many others have it better then some and others wish they could have the same thing. I still have both my parents together but they have been through plenty of life I should say and it was always a distraction trying to worry and help my family while always trying to worry about my life and what was going on. I still do it now it’s hard to care about me when you know your loved ones are hurt and struggling. I have also been a cause for many problems in my life/family mostly because of anger and bad choices and I have paid consequences and almost faced very harsh ones but I have learned and grown from all my past losses and mistakes and I have tried to be a much better man.
Who is your inspiration? What keeps you going to get up daily
and put effort into your music career?
My inspiration is my family. When I say family I don’t just mean blood family. Half my blood family I don’t consider family I do this for the ones who been there for me through my hardest times and helped me wake up everyday with a purpose. I push myself hard everyday cuz I want to give them the world because I know they all deserve it. I know I can give it to them but I have to give all of myself first.
What is your creative process like? What is the meaning behind
your current single?
My creative process just involves me writing and making music about my life and all the things I love to do. It may be good and it may be bad but in my creative process I like to almost bring my fans and supports in a trip through my mind to see how I think m and really feel about this life we live and also I want to bring them closer into my life and let them experience what I did and how I look at life. The meaning behind my next single drop “Gorrilas” is just a song about me and my day 1’s my close friends and what we do on a normal basis and are used to doing since growing up.
What is the name of the current single/ep/album that you
are pushing? Do you prefer people to buy it or stream? And
why?
The current single I am going to be pushing right now is called “Gorillas” and it will be distributed an all platforms. I prefer people to stream it because it is easy and accessible for everyone to try and stream.
With the industry changing so much, would you stay indie or
sign to a label? Why and why not?
With the way the Industry is now I would love to sget signed to a label if the terms were correct but so many times now it’s so hard to trust people and companies that I feel I would rather build up my own brand my own dynasty and remain indie until the right deal came around to me and I could see it benefit me and my family. I also like to own all my own things and I like to be a leader and run things. It feels nice when it’s your own company and your not working for another.
Do you feel like the music industry has went down since the
pandemic? Why or why not? Where you affected by the
pandemic with music or everyday life?
No I feel the music industry has stayed the same showing minor improvements since the pandemic. I think the pandemic affected us in a positive way because it gave artists the creative time we needed to just sit back and master our craft. I was affected by the pandemic as well but it actually pushed me to become a much better song writer and a much better artists as I started working on music everyday and taking it much much more serious. Even mixing and mastering songs on my own and trying to make beats and music.
If you were give a chance to sit down and have a business
dinner with a celebrity who would it be and why?
Even though I’m not a fan of him I would love to have a celebrity dinner with Russ because I feel that he has the most knowledge and down to earth ego that I could talk to him and learn about many things from Indie to a label standpoint. Russ has a lot of knowledge and most importantly a lot of money and the way he came up in the music game is a way a lot of upcoming and indie artists should research and look into because he shows that almost anybody can make it In this game with the right plan and the right team.
How do you balance everyday life tied into your music career?
I balance everyday life and my music career excellent by just making sure I show both enough love and enough time. I’m a Libra so balance has been something in my life that I have always had and have always been good at. I know that In life to be successful and to also not have negative effects or drain yourself too much mentally and physically everything you do must be balanced. Anything in life done too much to too little could have negative and lasting effects on you and I realized this at a young age.
Tell me about your most memorable moment in your career?
My most memorable moment so far has to be actually something that happened last week as I hosted my first event an Artist Showcase in the town I grew up in as a host and business man and honestly killed it. I made a lot of money and was able to put on for so many artists and see them so happy that it showed me this is my true job in life it all made sense.
What style of music do you prefer to make? Would you
ever try a different lane?
My style for music I always prefer is rap/drill music. I have been listening to that type of music since the day I can remember even hearing music and have always loved it from the energy to the flow to the wordplay. I love so many genres though and so many artists that you don’t have to even ask me to lane change I’m constantly changing my flow and the beats and tone I use in my music and always trying something new because my music range is very broad and wide. This is why I feel I am a huge assess to a label or music teams because I can adapt and jump on any type of beat or song with people I just have to feel the energy.
Do you have a celebrity crush?
Yes my 2 celebrity crushes for life have been Mariah Carey (my number 1) and Alicia Keys. I will marry Mariah one day.
Is there anyone who you would collab with right now?
There are so many artists I would love to collab with right now but if I had to choose celebrity I would have to chose 3. Pierre Bourne, Thouxanbanfauni and PnB Rock. I would have loved to collab with Juice Wrld as well or Pop smoke. Both give me so much inspiration in my music now.
Who is the producer and engineer behind your music?
I have many different producers and engineers not just one in particular. I have been all around so far even though I just am still starting my music career but I plan on meeting many different producers and engineers on my music journey.
What are you currently working on and what is next for you?
I am currently working on dropping a lot of my unreleased music these next few months and shooting a lot of music videos we have a lot of drops planned me and my team. I also am working on maybe getting an official EP out once my fanbase is right and a little bigger and I also am working on just hosting events and getting my name out throughout NYS and the whole world.
When it comes to fashion, whats your dressing style ?
When it comes to fashion my style has always been calm and sporty since I’ve always been an athlete. I love sweatpants and sweatshirts being from NY my whole life and I don’t care too much for designer. I’ve never been a needy person or very materialistic but now I would love to up my fashion and my family’s fashion and make designer living something normal for us.
What is your creative process like and who inspired you to
make music?
I was inspired to make music by my friends and my 2 favorite artists DMX (my favorite) and 2pac. These 2 artists growing up were ones I listened to a lot especially being with my dad a lot he always played them in the car and it made me love rap so much. I do have artists I love and look up to in the new generation but those 2 artists were the ones who gave me motivation and the love to make music.
What would you be doing right now if it wasn’t for your music
career?
If it wasn’t for my music career right now to be honest I don’t know what I would be doing. I’m not one to give up and stop chasing a dream but I can’t see myself doing nothing more then either getting in trouble doing dumb stuff or just working a 9-5 and trying to figure out how to help my family.
What is one message you would give to your fans?
Never stop believing in yourself or the power you have inside you. I know it’s cliche but we are so strong and smart as humans and have so much talent but we constantly are pushed down or thrown away by society and overlooked because we don’t fit certain needs. No matter what you like to do music, school, sports video games, photograph if you see an Avenue in it for you, you love it and can see yourself doing it everyday give it 110% effort and no matter what anybody says just chase that dream until it becomes a reality. Manifesting and speaking things into existence is the best thing I could’ve started doing because as I changed my mindset and my thinking and started working harder to actually achieve what I want not what others want I saw my life start to drastically change in a good way and now I never look back.
