Eros So Handsome brings a different sound when it comes to music. His style, his vibe and the way he dresses is the perfect combination to how his music sound, great flow and melody. Check out our exclusive talk with him below.
Tell me in a few words, who you are. How would you describe
yourself in a short story?
My name is Maurice a.k.a Eros So Handsome. I grew up in Alexandria, VA
but I currently live in upstate NY; I consider VA home though. To be
honest, there aren’t many words to describe myself that would do me
justice. I am an artistic genius who is resilient in every sense of the word
and is in tune with his spirit. I know for sure my soul has lived on Earth
many times.
● What’s your stage name and how did you come up with it?
Eros So Handsome. I went by Eros for a few years when I started taking
my poetry seriously (I was into Greek mythology heavy at the time and I
didn’t wanna just pick the name Zeus; Eros the god of love was more
fitting). I started writing music a little less than two years ago so I
decided to add some flair to my name with “So Handsome”; as that is
one of the main things my mom would call me growing up.
● What got you into music?
I’ve always loved rap music. The first song I ever heard from the genre
was “Soldier” by Destiny’s Child feat. Lil Wayne. It drew me in and from
then I got into Lil Wayne’s music. I would always perform his songs in
front of an imaginary crowd in my room with the remote as my mic.
When I was doing poetry I felt like I got to the point where I mastered it,
I needed a challenge; that’s when I knew it was time to get into music.
● What was life like growing up?
Life was good, I come from a household with both parents who love
each other very much. My first passion was football, as I dreamed of
being in the NFL. Once I got to high school we moved to NY and I didn't
get the playing time I wanted which led me to focus on track where I
shined. After graduating I had the chance to go D1 for track but I didn’t
take advantage. And now I’m here giving my all to music.
● Who is your inspiration? What keeps you going to get up daily and
put effort into your music career?
My family is what inspires me and drives me to be the best version of
myself within music and life in general. As far as music inspiration Lil
Wayne definitely is the biggest influence with how I go about making my
music. I feel like I truly embody his genius ways of rhyming and putting
words together.
● What is your creative process like? What is the meaning behind
your current single?
I turn on a beat and I write whatever comes to mind. I like writing to
parts of the beat that no one hears or doesn’t think to write to. The
meaning behind my first single ever “Take Some Time” was my first song
I ever recorded and I uploaded it to see how it would do. It did 10k
streams and I took that as a sign to really take my music seriously.
● What is the name of the current single/ep/album that you are
pushing? Do you prefer people to buy it or stream? And why?
I am currently pushing my newest mixtape that I dropped on Jan. 3rd
called “Welkome To The World Of Eros " and Dos: The Rejekts (Deluxe)” it is
sort of a sequel to my first mixtape I dropped last March. To be honest it
doesn’t matter to me if people stream or buy my music because that’s
not what I do it for. I just want my artistry and message to be heard by
the world.
● With the industry changing so much, would you stay indie or sign to
a label? Why and why not?
I would stay independent. There isn’t any amount of money that can
compensate for my artistry. Also to reiterate I don’t do this for money;
my music is an expression of my true self with hidden messages for
those enlightened enough to get it.
● Do you feel like the music industry has gone down since the
pandemic? Why or why not? Were you affected by the pandemic
with music or everyday life?
The only thing that went down is artists being able to do live shows,
other than that i don’t think much has changed. The pandemic made me
drop out of college and that ultimately led me to really focus on my
artistry. So I’m thankful for it.
● If you were given a chance to sit down and have a business dinner
with a celebrity who would it be and why?
It would probably be Wayne if we're talking music wise, just so I can pick
his brain and get some tips on how to elevate my music. If we were just
talking in general I would go with Louis Farrakhan. So I can gain
knowledge on what I can do to help our people through my music.
● How do you balance everyday life tied into your music career?
For the most part I have it pretty balanced because doing shows is like
going to work. Doing these forms is like school. The only thing I’m still
trying to get a grasp on is managing my money, because traveling to all
these shows isn't cheap…
● Tell me about your most memorable moment in your career?
My career kind of just started this year to be honest. I would say my first
real show in January hosted by Mr. Scott Morris is one I’ll always
remember since it was my first. This last show I did in Brooklyn for the
QCDJs tour was the most memorable because it was the first time I felt
the whole crowd in unison with me, and it was the first show my parents
came to see.
● What style of music do you prefer to make? Would you ever try a
different lane?
I make whatever I’m feeling. That’s why I don’t like calling myself a
rapper, I’m an artist. I can make any genre if I put my mind to it. Another
reason why Wayne is my favorite; he really mastered rap and went on to
do a rock album…. and it was fireeeee. I would be down to do my own
variation of rock and I like R&B type songs.
● Do you have a celebrity crush?
I want it to be known I laughed out loud at this question, let me find out
y’all playing matchmaker! It’s definitely Halle Bailey ughhh. I like Jorja
Smith as well. I would make a few outing appearances with Lizzo just to
get people talking in the media.
● Is there anyone who you would collab with right now?
Lil Wayne, Wayne, Weezy F Baby, and Ty Dolla $ign. The list is
wayyyyyyyy bigger but those are the main two for sure. I won’t feel like I
made it in the industry until I get that Wayne verse just off the fact he
knows my music and wants to collab.
● Who is the producer and engineer behind your music?
Claybourne the MC. I've been working with him for about a year now. I
used to work with a friend named Hoddy, he also makes music under the
name Dos Reel (who I made the mixtapes with, those are all his beats)
but he wasn’t really focused on my development as an artist so I made
the switch to “Neighbor’s Studio” shoutout Stan the man with the plan.
● What are you currently working on and what is next for you?
I’m working on getting my name out there and doing more shows. I’m
working on being the biggest artist by the end of the year (when I plan
on dropping my debut album). I’m also just working on growing as a well
rounded artist; I just started rapping two years ago.
● When it comes to fashion, whats your dressing style ?
It’s hard to describe how I dress. I like doing things people wouldn’t
think to try; tying a shoestring into a bow in my hair, tying a flannel
across my chest instead of around my waist. I like shoes that nobody
has; Jordan 16s, everyone has the CDG Converse with the one heart, i
got the lowtops with hearts all over them. The way I dress is another
expression of myself.
● What is your creative process like and who inspired you to make
music?
I just write whatever comes to mind first; If I think of a catchy hook I’ll
start with that and write line by line. Or i'll just write and feel out the
beat to see if I can just rap the whole song , or find a hook within what I
write. Lil Wayne is who inspired me to make music. I embody his way of
articulating himself as a creative genius.
● If you could open up for one celebrity who would it be and why?
Lil Wayne, come on now. Seriously though it would be Wayne
cause that has always been a dream of mine to share a stage with him. It’s
already done since I said it.
● Any funny stories or embarrassing moments you want to share with
our readers?
Nah, they’ll have to get to know me in person to know those stories.
Trust me I got lots of crazy stories depending on the topic of
conversation.
● What would you be doing right now if it wasn’t for your music
career?
What I’m doing now; working. But I would be focusing on my poetry
and making merch. I would also continue to draw as I am an artist in
that sense as well.
● What is one message you would give to your fans?
I appreciate every single one of you! I don’t forget anyone or anything.
Let’s say I’m having a bad day and I don’t wanna take a picture with you,
I’ll remember that and give you something better than a picture. If you
show love or hit me up I’ll respond if I see it. One thing about me is I’m
an open book, if you ask me a question I’m gonna answer it honestly to
the best of my ability!
